MSU Denver Students Gain Global Internal Audit Experience
Six Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAcc) students from MSU Denver recently represented their university at the IIA Global Student Conference, an event that brought together over 160 students and 50 educators from 86 universities across 19 countries. This participation, made possible by the generous support of the Institute of Internal Auditors Denver Chapter, provided the students with invaluable exposure to the global landscape of internal audit. The conference served as a critical platform for these future professionals to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application, preparing them for the complexities of the modern audit environment.
Bridging Theory and Practice: Case Studies and Career Insights
The conference curriculum was designed to immerse students in real-world internal audit challenges. Sessions covered a range of topics, from navigating career paths in internal audit to understanding the auditor's role in influencing decision-making and managing organizational risk. Major employers hosted sessions, offering direct insights into daily life and career progression within the field. A highlight was the Internal Audit Case Study Competition, where students analyzed business scenarios, identified risks and controls, and developed comprehensive audit approaches. MSU Denver teams, including Chelsea Rodriguez and Suzy Victoria Manoka, demonstrated their analytical prowess by securing impressive 4th and 5th place finishes among 25 international teams.
Innovative Experiential Learning and Professional Development
Beyond student participation, MSU Denver's commitment to innovative education was showcased through Professor Jo Erven's presentation in the educator sessions. Professor Erven highlighted the university's unique experiential learning model, where graduate students function as the university's internal audit department, conducting actual assurance and advisory engagements. This hands-on approach provides students with unparalleled practical experience. The conference not only enhanced the students' technical skills but also significantly expanded their professional networks and global perspective, reinforcing the broad impact of internal audit and positioning them for successful careers in the field.
